Wood Gas Truck |
|
**Update** 10/24/2009 The truck runs on Wood!!! We were able to run and idle the truck on solely wood power. After adjusting the timing and letting the unit build gas the truck was able to run on woodgas.
10/01/2009– After some time away from the project we are going to give it another shot. Our first attempt came up short and did not produce woodgas. For this attempt we are going to follow FEMA’s plans due to the simplicity and the clear directions in the plans.
05/09/2009 The Gasifier System Details- Gasifier– Is an old metal 40 gallon gas water heater. We cut the tank in half about 14in from the bottom. We had to weld a plate over the bottom hole to seal the system. The hearth is a 15in steel tire rim.
Filter– The filter is a 20 gallon pressure tank. We decided on using a cyclone style system, this required us to roll a cone that fit inside the tank. The cone was rolled from 16ga. sheet metal, it measured 14in on the top and 5in on the bottom.
Cooler– Due to the high temperature of the gas leaving the gasifier it needs to be cooled to ambient temperature before it is able to be used in the engine. Do to this temperature change we decided to use schedule 40 steel pipe. The uprights on the cooler are 4in and the horizontals are 3in. The horizontals are bird’s mouthed to allow for smooth flow. The gas will leave the filter and enter the cooler on the top left and exit on the bottom right, then go through the bed and up toward the engine.
05/01/2009- The truck conversion has been coming along quite well. We have the cooler completed and mounted. The filter is in the finishing stages. The cone proved to be a little difficult to roll, but we managed to achieve a very nice finished product (with a little help). The gasifier is the next step to be completed.
04/17/2009-We have been working on the cooler for the unit. The project has taken longer than originally anticipated, but we feel that we still be able to finish.
03/01/2009- We have just begun our conversion. The truck we will be converting is a 1992 Chevy 1500 pickup.
